LICENSING SURVEY

The LES Foundation Annual Survey of the Licensing Industry

The Foundation's Annual Survey provides insight and prospective on events and trends impacting the business of licensing from 2004 to 2009. The survey results offer licensing professionals data to better understand and advance their business environment and give business and government leaders a greater appreciation for the value and significance of licensing, intellectual asset management and business development.

Starting in 2009, LES (USA & Canada) has placed increasing focus on the industry-specific Royalty Rate and Deal Terms Survey initiative. This year the Life Sciences Sector will broaden its survey to include international companies and deals outside of USA and Canada. This is a joint initiative by LES (USA &Canada) Life Science Sector, LESI Life Sciences Sector and international LES societies. This coordinated effort will enhance participation by members and provide leading-edge information through its results.

In addition, the Chemicals, Energy, Environment and Materials (CEEM) Sector will be launching its own Royalty Rate Survey with an initial focus on USA and Canada only.

Both survey instruments are in development and will be circulated to members for their participation in the 4th quarter of 2009. The survey will collect data on deals conducted over the past two years. Preliminary results and analysis will be shared at the 2010 Spring Meeting with a final report published July, 2010. Additional Survey insights and analysis will be offered through workshops at the 2010 Annual Meeting.

As before, survey responses will be gathered by an independent source and will remain completely confidential. The objective is to provide leading licensing information to members that is not available from other industry sources. Broad survey participation by LES/LESI members and LES member companies is vital to the success of this innovative effort to bring timely and valuable industry information to members.
